The UN responded to threats by President Duterte to Agnes Callamard

The United Nations human rights office hit back on President Rodrigo Dutertes’ threat against their Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard.

In a news briefing, UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said that they condemn President Duterte’s threat to Callamard in case the latter pursue her investigation on the alleged extrajudicial killings in the country related to the government’s war on drugs.

“Last week Mr. Duterte threatened to slap [UN special rapporteur Agnes] Callamard if she investigates him for alleged extrajudicial killings,” he said.

“He made the same threat against her in June after she criticized his ‘war on drugs’ campaign which has left thousands dead,” Colville added referring to President Duterte’s remarks after Callamard’s visit in the Philippines in May.

Callamard is UN’s special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, her plans to visit the county last December 2016 was canceled as he refused to accept the President’s conditions.

Colville added that recently, Callamard has been subjected to online bashing: “Tirade of online abuse, including physical threats, during what appears to be a prolonged and well-orchestrated trolling operation across the internet and on social media,” he said.

“We condemn this treatment of Ms. Callamard and the disrespect it shows to the Human Rights Council that appointed her in the strongest terms,” he added.

It could be recalled that during his speech in the 65th General Assembly of the League of Cities of the Philippines, President Duterte said he will not think twice on slapping Callamard if she will try to investigate that Philippine’s war on drugs.
