A farmer discovered a secret passage to the lost city of Skara Brae!

It is undeniable that modern technology has played a big role in most of our most relevant scientific discoveries. However, sometimes the most amazing discoveries are found by accident. Imagine how fascinating it could be to unintentionally knock down a stone, only to chance upon one of the greatest discoveries regarding ancient human civilizations?

This is what happened to the discovery of the Skara Brae when a farmer accidentally stumbled upon something that is older than the Stonehenge.

Skara Brae lies near the beautiful white beach of the Bay of Skaill. The location is so quaint you can almost expect Gandalf, Bilbo, or Frodo Baggins popping out of nowhere.

It was in 1850 when a farmer in Scotland discovered the ancient settlement after moving a rock aside. Experts believe that the city is more ancient than that of great pyramids of Egypt, as it turns out to be over 5,000 years old.

Researchers believe that the city was one of the oldest settlements in Great Britain.

Despite its great age, the settlement has been excellently preserved because sand dunes covered and protected it from the elements. Only 8 houses have been recovered from its ruins. These houses had tunnels that link them together and also have stone doors that separate the houses

Each hut has a bed area, with one larger than the rest. It is presumed to have been used by the elders of the house. The houses discovered contain a waterproof storage bin where live fishes, their main source of food, have been kept.

Skara Brae is generally believed to have been an egalitarian society wherein all members are equal in status as houses appear similar in size. Truly, this historical place sitting on the edge of a beautiful bay is a must-visit, especially to those who have a liking for history.

What can you say about this discovery that has contributed a lot to our knowledge of ancient history? Drop your thoughts in the comments section below!
